Formed in Toronto over 15 years ago, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran King Selah, a fixture on the Canadian Jamaican Reggae landscape for two decades. King Selah leads a collective of artists, vocalists, horn players, guitarists, keyboardists and a rock-steady rhythm section of Jah-lin Edwards (drums), Chris & Michael Davies (guitar & keyboards), Snappy (bass) & The High Plains Drifter (lead guitar). The band takes its name from a legendary rooftop apartment on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto; “The House of David” was the after hours spot of choice for the city’s burgeoning reggae scene in the late 1980s, a place where members of The Resinators, Explorer Band, Revelation, Selassie I Power, Imagine Rainbow Warriors and special guest touring musicians who performed at The Legendary Bamboo Club earlier that evening would join together and jam late into the night.
House of David Gang recently toured to Eastern and Central Canada with their Annual Bob Marley Birthday & Food Drive tour, which sold out shows in several major markets. They have performed at venues all over Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick & NovaScotia , with a festival resume that includes The Atlantic Jazz Festival (Halifax, NS), The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival (Fredericton, NB), The Evolve Music and Awareness Festival (Antigonish,NS), Come Together Music Festival (Owen Sound, ON), The Hillside Festival (Guelph, ON), Caribfest (Barrie, ON), Salty Jam (Saint John, NB), The Sunseekers Ball (Saint John, NB) and the Toronto Freedom Festival where they played to an estimated crowd of over 15,000 people in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The band is currently hard at work in the studio, recording a new EP “Three the Hard Way” with the singles “Three Wise Men of Jamaica”, “Reggae Party” and “Don’t Make Me Cry.” They are receiving regular airplay across Canada and have recently been played as far away as France and Spain. The House of David Gang delivers an uplifting reggae show, spreading the message of the reggae prophets; Love, Equal Rights, Humanity and Self-empowerment. Come join “the Gang”!
King Selah – Lead Vocals & Back-Up Vocals
At the young age 17, Desmond Anderson moved to Canada from his home in Portland, Jamaica. He was immediately taken in by the gospel community and sang for many years in church and festival choirs. Upon staring his own group which he called “Selah”, Desmond Anderson become the voice of a resurgence of a roots rock style in Toronto playing frequently at the Bamboo Club, Lee’s Palace, El Mocambo and festivals throughout Ontario.
In 1988, two local bands, (Selah and Imagine Rainbow Warriors) merged together. Desmond became King Selah, the powerful lead vocalist with a heart of gold and the band was then dubbed “The House of David Gang” – named after a Queen Street West house those very members shared and used to the host after-hour reggae parties 1988 -1995. Over several years many musicians have been a part of The House of David and the group played a key role in developing some of Toronto’s top session and reggae players.
For the past 15 years King Selah and the House of David Gang have hosted the Toronto Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer Tributes which have helped bring spotlight Toronto’s burgeoning roots rock reggae scene. Now with a new line-up the House of David Gang faithfully recreates the soulful and classic roots rock reggae sound (Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh). KINGSTON IS THE BIRTH PLACE FOR REGGAE MUSIC, AND ONLY JAH KNOWS WHAT HIT THE ISLAND. BECAUSE THE PRODUCERS WANTED ONLY GROUPS TO SING ON THEIR TAPES, ACTS LIKE THE PARAGONS, WAILERS, HEPTONES, AND THE TECHNIQUES, TO NAME A FEW, BEGAN TO EMERGE.
MR. ROCK STEADY AS HE IS CALLED, ALTON ELLIS, STOOD OUT AS A SOLO ARTISTE AT THAT TIME WITH HIT AFTER HIT THROUGH DUKE REID FROM TREASURE ISLES, AND COXSONE DODD FROM STUDIO ONE. AFTER GAINING INDEPENDENCE, POLITICS PLAYED A MAJOR PART IN MANY JAMAICANS LIVES.
A GREAT ERA WAS NOW IN SEDUCTION AS JOE HIGGS, THE FATHER OF REGGAE MUSIC, THOUGHT IT WAS WISE AS TO BRING THE MUSIC TO A HIGHER OR GREATER OVERSTANDING. THE WAILERS, DENNIS BROWN, BURNING SPEAR, CULTURE, AND OTHERS TOOK REGGAE MUZIK’S ONE DROP SOUND TO THE WORLD STAGE AND CREATED HISTORY; BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS BEING THE PRIMARY CONTRIBUTORS. DRUM AND BASS, THE HEART BEAT OF THE PEOPLE, WITH LYRICAL CONTENT GAVE RISE TO A SPIRITUAL AWARENESS OF JAMAICAN’S DAY TO DAY EXISTENCE. THE WAILERS, THEMSELVES FROM TRENCH TOWN, BEING OF RASTAFARIAN LIVITY, EMBRACED BOTH THE TEACHINGS OF EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE THE FIRST OF ETHIOPIA AND OF MARCUS GARVEY AT A TIME WHEN MARCUS TOLD JAMAICAN’S TO LOOK TO THE EAST FOR THE COMING OF A BLACK KING.
DUB WISE CREATED YET ANOTHER WAVE WITHIN OUR MUSICAL HISTORY. U-ROY, BIG YOUTH, BRIGADIER JERRY, KING YELLOW-MAN, AND THE DUO, MICHIGAN AND SMILEY TOOK THE DJ ERA WITH THE DRUM AND BASS BRINGING THEIR OWN UNIQUE STYLE AND FASHION. WHEN BOB PASSED ON IN FLESH, SLY AND ROBBIE PICKED UP THE BATTON WITH BLACK UHURU, ONLY TO SEE THEM CLAIMING THE FIRST REGGAE GRAMMY AT A TIME WHEN EVERYONE THOUGHT THE MUSIC HAD DIED WITH BOB MARLEY’S PASSING. CONSEQUENTLY, MANY ARTISTES BEGAN TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE GROWTH OF REGGAE MUSIC. NEW TALENTS WERE CONSISTENTLY EMERGING TO THE FOREFRONT.
